Āpyāyasva – The Vedic Vision of Growth, Nourishment, and Fulness
The Mantra
आप्यायस्व समेतु ते विश्वतः सोम वृष्ण्यम् ।
भवा वाजस्य संगथे ॥
Āpyāyasva sametu te viśvataḥ soma vṛṣṇyam |
bhavā vājasya saṅgathe ||
(Taittirīya Saṃhitā 1.4.32; also used in Vedic recitation traditions)
Meaning
“O Soma! May you grow and become full. May strength, vitality, and excellence flow into you from all directions. May you become the source and gathering place of nourishment, abundance, and spiritual wealth.”
The word Āpyāyasva (आप्यायस्व) comes from the Sanskrit root √pyā, meaning to fill, swell, flourish, nourish, or increase. It is an imperative expression:
“Grow!”
“Become full!”
“Be nourished!”
“Expand into your completeness!”
The mantra is not merely asking for physical increase. It is invoking a universal principle of life:
That which is nourished grows.
That which grows reaches fullness.
That which reaches fullness becomes capable of nourishing others.
Thus, Āpyāyasva is not simply growth in quantity; it is growth toward completeness.
Soma as the Symbol of Growth
In the Vedic tradition, Soma carries many layers of meaning.
- The Moon that waxes and wanes.
- The nourishing essence in nature.
- The subtle life-force within beings.
- The principle of joy, inspiration, and inner refreshment.
- The cooling and harmonizing energy of existence.
When the mantra says:
“Āpyāyasva”
it is not merely addressing the Moon in the sky. It is addressing the Soma within us—the part of our being that must be nourished for life to flourish.
Our body requires food.
Our mind requires peace.
Our intellect requires knowledge.
Our heart requires love.
Our soul requires truth.
The prayer is therefore:
“May every dimension of my being be nourished and brought to fullness.”
The Symbolism of the Waxing Moon
One of the most beautiful manifestations of this principle is the waxing Moon.
The Moon begins as a slender crescent and gradually grows toward fullness. This natural process became a profound spiritual metaphor for the Ṛṣis.
Just as the Moon grows night after night:
- Wisdom grows through study.
- Character grows through discipline.
- Compassion grows through service.
- Devotion grows through remembrance.
- Self-knowledge grows through contemplation.
No fullness appears suddenly.
The Full Moon is simply the culmination of many small increases.
Thus, Āpyāyamāna—“that which is continually growing and becoming full”—describes not only the Moon but also the spiritual journey of every seeker.
Āpyāyamāna – The State of Continuous Becoming
The present participle Āpyāyamāna (आप्यायमान) means:
“Being nourished.”
“Being filled.”
“Growing continuously.”
“Moving toward completeness.”
This is a profound idea.
The Vedas do not glorify stagnation.
Life itself is described as a process of continuous expansion.
A tree is beautiful because it grows.
A river is pure because it flows.
Knowledge is meaningful because it deepens.
Love is sacred because it expands.
Likewise, a human being is truly alive only when he or she is continuously growing.
To be Āpyāyamāna is to remain open to learning, refinement, and transformation.
Growth from All Directions
The mantra contains another beautiful phrase:
विश्वतः (Viśvataḥ) — “from all directions.”
The prayer is not for one-sided growth.
The Ṛṣis understood that imbalance leads to suffering.
A person may possess wealth but lack peace.
Another may possess knowledge but lack compassion.
Another may possess power but lack wisdom.
Therefore the prayer is:
“May growth come from every direction.”
Let the body become healthy.
Let the mind become calm.
Let the intellect become clear.
Let relationships become harmonious.
Let the spirit become awakened.
This is holistic growth.
This is Vedic growth.
From Fulness to the Infinite
The culmination of the Vedic vision is not merely worldly prosperity but spiritual completeness.
The Upaniṣads repeatedly declare that the nature of Reality is Pūrṇatā—fulness.
पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदं
पूर्णात् पूर्णमुदच्यते ।
पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय
पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते ॥
“Pūrṇa is That. Pūrṇa is This. From Pūrṇa arises Pūrṇa. Even when Pūrṇa is taken from Pūrṇa, Pūrṇa alone remains.”
The journey of Āpyāyasva ultimately culminates in Pūrṇatā.
We begin as seekers who feel incomplete.
We grow through experience, knowledge, devotion, and discipline.
We become Āpyāyamāna—ever expanding.
Finally, we discover that the fullness we sought was always our true nature.
Conclusion
The Vedic prayer Āpyāyasva is far more than a request for increase. It is a prayer for wholesome growth, inner nourishment, and spiritual maturity.
It reminds us that life is not about becoming more than others.
It is about becoming more fully ourselves.
Like the waxing Moon, may we grow steadily.
Like Soma, may we nourish others.
Like the sages, may we seek fullness in every dimension of life.
And through that journey from growth to completeness, may we discover the infinite fullness that is the Self.
Āpyāyasva — Grow.
Āpyāyamāna — Keep growing.
Pūrṇa — Become established in fullness.
