The Five Vital Energies (Pancha Prāṇa)
How our ancestors understood prāṇa — the life-force — has always fascinated me. According to ancient wisdom, five vital energies or "vāyus" manage our physical and subtle functions. These are not just physiological processes but sacred flows of life energy. This is the second sheath of our existence, that which differentiates living beings from non-living beings.
-
Prāṇa – Inward energy (Intake system)
This energy moves from the outside to the inside. It governs breathing and brings freshness through inhalation. Prāṇa sustains life by supplying vital energy to the body and mind. Without the prANa energy, our body cannot sustain itself. -
Apāna – Outward force (Evacuation system)
Apāna moves in the opposite direction — from the inside out. It is responsible for the removal of waste through excretion, urination, sweating, and reproductive functions. While prāṇa brings in what nourishes, apāna clears out what no longer serves us — allowing freshness to remain. -
Vyāna – Pervasive / Expansive energy (Circulatory system)
Vyāna distributes energy throughout the entire body. It governs blood circulation and the flow of nutrients and nerve impulses. It connects and integrates all systems, making sure energy reaches every cell. -
Udāna – Upward energy (Expressive system)
Udāna governs the region of the throat, head, and chest. It controls speech, the act of swallowing, intellectual clarity, and awareness. It is also said to guide the soul upward at the time of death. Udāna helps us express, grow, and evolve. -
Samāna – Balancing energy (Digestive system)
Samāna resides in the navel region and balances prāṇa and apāna. It takes care of digestion and assimilation and maintains internal harmony; ensures that what we eat is transformed into nourishment and energy.
An imbalance in any of these energies can lead to disease or mental distress. Ancient practices such as prāṇāyāmam (breath control) were designed to harmonize them. Simple steps go a long way:
Spend time in fresh air — go out in nature and breathe fresh air.
-
Breathe deeply and consciously — treat every breath as sacred.
-
Drink plenty of water — keep the internal system clean.
-
Eat mindfully and healthily — nourish the body, nourish the senses.
-
Evacuate internal impurities regularly — physically and mentally, internally and externally.
-
Find balance within — create routines, rest well, move frequently, meditate and discover peace within.
These practices are not mere rituals. We take life energy for granted. Yoga is a way to bring awareness of the prANa. Once the breathing process is taken care of, once we are aware of our own self, the rest will follow. Keep smiling😊
Hare Krishna!
