 Shiva Purana Book 1, Section 2, Chapter 38, Shlokaas 21 - 34

-- Shukracharya Said

-- Oh dear dadhicha! After I bow down to Lord Shiva, the lord of everyone, I am going to instruct you the highly potential Vedic mantra Mahāmṛtyuñjaya.

-- We worship the 3-eyed Lord Shiva, the Father and the Lord of the 3 worlds (bhu, bhuvah, svah), the father of the three spheres (vahni mandala, sUrya mandala, chandra mandala), the lord of the three guṇas (satva, rajas, tamas). The supreme Lord.

-- He is the essence of the three Tattvas (brahma tatva, vishnu tatva, shiva tatva), three fires  (गार्हपत्याग्निः,  आहवनीयाग्निः,  दक्षिणाग्निः), of every thing that is a multiple of three. The three heavens, three arms (triangles), everything that is a multiple of three.

- the greatest of the three deities. He is the fragrance (the virtuous), the nourisher in all living beings, everywhere, in the three Guṇas, in the creation.

-- He is the fragrance (the virtuous), the nourisher in the sense-organs, in the devas, and gaNAs. He is the essence as the fragrance in a flower. He is the Lord of devas.

- Oh the best among the learned ones, He is called the nourisher because it is from Him the supreme Puruṣa Śiva that the Prakṛti, the different Tattvas from Mahat to the different Indriyas, Viṣṇu, Brahmā, the sages, Indra and the devas derive their nourishment.

-- He is the source of nourishment to Vishnu, Brahma, the sages, great sages, of Indra, and all the devatAs, and that's why he is the "pushTivardhanam" (the Nourisher)

- That immortal deity shiva should be meditated upon through sacred rituals, penance, contemplation, yogic practices, meditation, observance of truth and all other means. You will be freed from the noose of Yama. The lord is the cause of both bondage and salvation.

-- In my opinion this Mṛtasañjīvanī mantra is the most excellent of all. Meditate upon it remembering Śiva with devotion. After Japa, Homa and recitation of the mantras observe fast, but drinking water, day and night. If the meditation is conducted in the presence of Śiva there is no fear of death from anywhere.

-- Through nyAsa and other rituals worship Shiva according to the prescribed procedures. Shiva who is merciful towards His devotees can thus be pleased.

-- I shall also mention the observance of this meditation. It is after this meditation that the mantra shall be repeated as long as the purpose is realised due to Śiva’s power.
