In Chapter 12 of Bhagawad Gita, Krishna says that His devotees are dear to Him. He then defines the qualities of His devotees:
- sarva-bhūtānāṁ adveṣhṭā : unenvious or lack of hatred towards all beings
- sarva-bhūtānāṁ maitra: friendliness or favorable disposition towards all beings
- sarva-bhūtānāṁ karuNa: compassion towards all beings
- nirmamaH: detached; refraining from claiming anything as his/her own
- nirahaMkAraH: free from pride; far from I, me and mine selfishness
- sama-dukha-sukha: equipoised in distress and happiness
- kshami: tolerant, forgiving; patient; enduring
- sutuShTa satataM: always pleased
- satatam yOgi: always in the meditative / satisfied state
- yatAtmA: self-controlled; self-restrained
- dRDhanischayaH: firm resolved
- mayyarpita-manas: mind dedicated to me
- mayyarpita-buddhi: intellect dedicated to me
- yasmān nodvijate loko: one who is not disturbed by the world
- lokān nodvijate cha yaḥ: one who does not disturb the world
- harṣha muktaH - free from pleasures
- amarṣha muktaH - free from pains
- bhayaa muktaH - free from fear
- udvegaiH muktaH - free from anxiety
- anapEkshaH: one who is not desirous of worldly gains
- shuchiH: clean, pure in conduct and behavior
- dakShaH: skillful in his activities
- udAsInaH: one who is situated in a higher plane; indifferent to his comforts
- gata-vyataH: who has crossed the state of "vyatha" - lamentation or regrets
- sarvArambha-parityAgi: who has renounced all sense of doership (or who has renounced all acts of desire, prohibited by the ‘sastras’)
- na hṛiṣhyati: does not rejoice
- na dveṣhṭi: does not despair
- na śhochati: does not worry or regret
- na kāṅkṣhati: does not hanker
- shubhA-ashubha-parityAgi: renouncer of good and evil deeds
- samaḥ śhatrau cha mitre cha: alike with enemies and friends
- samah mAna-apamAnayOH: alike in honor and dishonor
- samaH shita-ushna-sukha-dukhEShu: alike in all physical conditions
- sangavivarjitaH: free from associations
- tulya-ninda-stutiH: alike in praise and insults
- mauni: one in silent contemplation
- satushTaH ena-kena-chit: happy irrespective of anything
- anikEtaH: one who is not attached to a residence
- sthiramatiH: firmly fixed intellect
- bhakti-mAn: one who is full of devotion towards me
The last 3 qualities are EXTREMELY dear to Krishna! - dharmam-yatOktam-paryupAsate: follows this dharma as declared by Me
- shraddhadAnaH: one who is full of faith in Krishna
- mat-paramA: one who has set Krishna as the supreme goal
