Kailsaasa vAsa Gaureesha eesha

This is one of the simplest and the most beautiful compositions in the magnanimous Kannada daasa saahitya. This one is dedicated to my friend who does not know Kannada but has experienced the song deep within his heart.

ಕೈಲಾಸ ವಾಸ ಗೌರೀಶ ಈಶ 
ತೈಲಧಾರೆಯಂತೆ ಮನಸು ಕೊಡು ಹರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶಂಭೋ||

taila dhAreyaMte manasu koDu hariyalli shaMbhO ||]

Hey kailaasavAsa (the one residing in kailAsa), hey gaureesha (the Lord of Gauri), hey eesha (Lord), give me the mind (intellect, attitude, understanding, mood, desire) like the continuous free flowing stream of oil [where there is no friction; nothing can stop it] hey Shambhu (the all purifying one).

ಅಹೋರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ಅನುಜರಾಗ್ರಣಿಯಾಗಿ
ಮಹಿಯೊಳಗೆ ಚರಿಸಿದೆನೋ ಮಹದೇವನೇ
ಅಹಿಭೂಶಣನೆ ಎನ್ನ ಅವಗುಣಗಳೆಣಿಸದಲೇ
ವಿಹಿತಧರ್ಮದಲಿಡು ವಿಷ್ಣು ಭಕುತಿಯನು ಕೊಡು ಶಂಭೋ|೧|

mahiyoLage charisidenO mahadEvanE 

ahibhooshaNane enna avaguNagaLeNisadalE 

vihitadharmadaliDu viShNu bhakutiyanu koDu tande shaMbhO]

In the deep darkness of the late night [in severe ignorance], I am wandering in this world as a leader of the lesser born [the immature ones] hey mahadEva (Lord of the dEvAs). Hey ahibhooshaNa (one decorated by snakes), without considering (disregarding) my deficiencies, please affix me, endow me, in the righteous path, and give me the devotion to Lord Vishnu, hEy Shambhu.

ಮನಸು ಕಾರಣವಲ್ಲ ಪಾಪ ಪುಣ್ಯಕ್ಕೆಲ್ಲ
ಅನಲಾಕ್ಷ ನಿನ್ನ ಪ್ರೇರಣೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ
ಧನುಜಗತ ಮದಹಾರಿ ದಂಡ ಪ್ರಣಾಮವ ಮಾಡ್ಪೆ
ಮಣಿಸು ಈ ಶಿರವ ಸಜ್ಜನ ಚರಣ ಕಮಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಂಭೋ|೨|

[manasu kAraNavalla pApapuNyakella 

analAksha ninna prEraNe illade 

dhanujagata madahAri daNDa praNAmava maaDve

maNisu ee shirava sajjana charaNa kamaladali shambho]

This mind is not the cause for all the good and bad deeds (pApa and puNya) without your inspiration hey analAksha (one with the fiery eye, the all destroying). Oh the one who destroys the sinful inclinations and pride I fall at your feet like a stick, please submit this head at the foot of the lotus feet of the sajjana (good, righteous devotees) hey shambhu.

ಭಾಗೀರಥಿಧರನೆ ಭಯವ ಪರಿಹರಿಸಯ್ಯ
ಲೇಸಾಗಿ ನೀ ಸಲಹೊ ಸಂತತ ಸರ್ವದೇವ
ಭಾಗವತಜನ ಪ್ರಿಯ ವಿಜಯ ವಿಠಲನಂಘ್ರಿ
ಜಾಡು ಮಾಡದೆ ಭಜಿಪ ಭಾಗ್ಯವನು ಕೊಡು ಶಂಭೋ|೩|

[bhAgeeratheedharane bhayava pariharisayya

lEsaagi nee salaho santata sarvadEva 

bhAgawatajana priya vijaya viTThalanghri 

jAgu maaDade bhajipa bhAgyavanu koDu shambho]

Hey bhAgeerathidhara (the one who carries the all purifying mother Ganga on his head) please cure me of this fear, please protect me and nourish me continuously oh sarvadEva (the Lord of everything). Oh the one loved by the bhaagawatajana (devotees of the Lord), please endow me with the fortune to faultlessly engage in worship at the lotus feet of the Lord vijaya viTThala [Vijaya dAsA's iShTa dEvata or deity] hey shambhu.
