Rudra - dhyAnam

In the Sri Rudra laghunyAsa, we find a beautiful dhyAna shloka to visualize Rudra that we meditate upon before chanting Sri Rudram. Here is a humble attempt to contemplate on the meaning: 

आपाताल-नभस्स्थलान्त-भुवन-ब्रह्माण्ड-माविस्फुरत्

ज्योति-स्स्फाटिक-लिङ्ग-मौलि-विलसत्-पूर्णेन्दु-वान्तामृतैः ।

अस्तोकाप्लुत-मेक-मीश-मनिशं रुद्रानु-वाकाञ्जपन्ध्या

ये-दीप्सित-सिद्धये ध्रुवपदं-विँप्रो-ऽभिषिञ्चे-च्चिवम् ॥ 

  • आपाताल – all the lokAs / nether regions (the 7 or 14 layers of creation) starting from pAtAla lOka
  • नभः-स्थल-अन्त – all the way to the space and within 
  • भुवन – the worlds
  • ब्रह्माण्डम् – the cosmic egg, universe
  • आ-विस्फुरत् – pervading, radiating everywhere
  • ज्योतिः – divine light
  • स्फाटिक-लिङ्ग – crystal (pure) Śiva-liṅga
  • मौलि – crown / head
  • विलसत् – shining, resplendent
  • पूर्ण-इन्दु – full moon
  • वान्त-अमृतैः – pouring forth nectar

  • अस्तोका-आप्लुतम् – abundantly overflowed or flooded
  • एकम् ईशमनिशम् – one, non-dual, Lord, the uninterrupted (anisham) 
  • रुद्रअनुवाकान् जपन् – chanting the recitations of the hymns of Rudra chanting
  • ध्यायेत् – should meditate
  • ईप्सित-सिद्धये – for the attainment of the desired goal
  • ध्रुव-पदम् – the eternal state / liberation
  • विप्रः – the wise person, brāhmaṇa
  • अभिषिञ्चेत् – should anoint, consecrate
  • शिवम् – Śiva
The viprAs should meditate upon and worship Lord Shiva in the form of Rudra, whose radiant light pervades everything from the nether worlds to the heavens and the skies, filling the entire universe, whose crystal liṅga shines crowned with the full moon, from which nectar flows abundantly. Chanting the Rudra hymns and contemplating the one supreme Lord, one attains the eternal state and the fulfillment of all desired goals.

ब्रह्माण्ड-व्याप्त-देहा भसित-हिमरुचा भासमाना भुजङ्गैः
कण्ठे कालाः कपर्दाः कलित-शशिकला-श्चण्ड-कोदण्ड-हस्ताः ।
त्र्यक्षा रुद्राक्ष-मालाः प्रकटित-विभवा-श्शाम्भवा मूर्तिभेदाः
रुद्रा-श्श्री-रुद्र-सूक्त-प्रकटित-विभवा नः प्रयच्चन्तु सौख्यम् ॥

  • ब्रह्माण्ड-व्याप्त-देहाः – whose bodies pervade the universe
  • भसित – smeared with sacred ash 
  • हिम-रुचा – shining white like snow
  • भासमानाः – resplendent
  • भुजङ्गैः – with serpents
  • कण्ठे – on the neck
  • कालाः – limitless times  
  • कपर्दाः – matted locks
  • कलित-शशि-कलाः – adorned with the crescent moons
  • चण्ड-कोदण्ड-हस्ताः – holding the fierce bow
  • त्रि-अक्षाः – three-eyed ones
  • रुद्राक्ष-मालाः – wearing Rudrākṣa garlands
  • प्रकटित-विभवाः – manifesting divine power
  • शाम्भवाः – forms of Śambhu (Śiva)
  • मूर्ति-भेदाः – various manifestations
  • रुद्राः – the Rudras
  • श्री-रुद्र-सूक्त – the sacred Śrī Rudra hymn
  • प्रकटित-विभवाः – whose glory is revealed therein
  • नः – to us
  • प्रयच्चन्तु – may they bestow
  • सौख्यम् – happiness, well-being
May the Rudras, whose various divine forms pervade the universe, whose bodies are radiant with sacred white ash that resemble the snow, adorned with serpents, bearing matted locks, the crescent moon, and the mighty bow, three-eyed and wearing Rudrākṣa garlands, whose manifold forms and powers are revealed in the Śrī Rudra hymn. May they grant us happiness and well-being.
